That is to say, I have developed a new pet peeve: Seeing manga and anime translations which try to make the dialogue more Japanese-sounding.
I don’t remember exactly where I saw it, but I recall seeing an English-released manga which translated one girls scream as “Kyaaaaa!” This is common, of course, except for one problem: She didn’t say “Kyaaaaa!” in the original Japanese text.
I don’t mind honorifics in translations or anything like that, but when you go out of your way to add things which weren’t even there then it is a step too far.

The case you describe (‘Kyaaaaa’) sounds like it’s expected to be understood in English – which suggests that ‘Kyaaaa’ has entered English itself, or at least English as understood by manga readers and translators.

Wapanenglish is different from the regular kind. It’s kind of weird that the language that a lot of fans want Japanese media to be translated to (and the language that a lot of them actually do translate it into) is a bizarre pidgin dialect, but there it is. I expect “glomp” to make it into a Tokyopop shoujo manga translation eventually.

I remember seeing “Glomp” in something that wasn’t the stereotypical Tokyopop Shoujo. It was like Yotsuba or…no, Dokebi Bride?
Or possibly Vertical’s Buddha, it had a very vernacular translation
“Nobody sees my peeps as humans, we’re treated like beasts.” – 72
“I won’t let this chance pass by. I’ll kick some ass, and move up in the army.” – 141
“Birds are cool, man. Nothin’ like spreading your wings and soaring.” – 75
I think it worked though.

You know, someday we’re going to see GAR in a translation. Perhaps that is whats taking the Gurren Lagann translation by ADV so long…

I hate the use of “Love” in the english-translated manga. I know it’s like, the translator knows it’s like, but they put down love.
Then these Eigotaku run around saying they love each other, even though, normally, it’s like.
It frustrates me.

I bet it was Tokyopop. They hardly even translate, more than they localize in sometimes incredibly bizarre fashion.
