The first step is sometimes the hardest: Starting a new series

It’s happened to me quite a few times, and I’m sure that it’s happened to a lot of people too.

Why is it that sometimes starting a new show can be so difficult? There’s nothing holding it back, there are no prejudices against it, many times I have the show in my possession specifically so I can watch them. And yet, I will start episode 1, then pause it a few minutes in, then walk away or ignore it, and then close it and say “I’ll save it for later.”

It happened with Yamato (which I’m still not finished with) and most recently it happened with Round Vernian Vifam. After much struggle, I finally got through the first episode of Vifam, and am poised to keep watching, but it’s amazing how resistant I can be to new things even when I want new things.

By the way, expect some Vifam reviews in the future.

  1. The similar thing happens to me sometimes when a new season starts. I will have like 2 or 3 episodes of a series before I start the series. I some reason find it hard to start into a new season.

One reason maybe because if I watch a show immediately afterward I have nothing to watch until the next show is out, which can be a few days to a week. Not sure if that makes sense but I have experienced the same thing that you go through. Starting a show is hard sometimes.

  2. I feel because a lot of anime starts the same way, it’s just hard to be like WHOA THIS IS DIFFERENT AND WORTH MY TIME, so you keep putting it off.

In my case, I’ve yet to get past volume one of Gintama, or Episode one of the Anime. I hear it’s good, but I just can’t stomach it.

  3. Hahaha, I completely hear you. With all my backlog I can’t choose which anime to watch, and I eventually end up idling around until I watch nothing at all.

Once I pop I can’t stop though, like Gurren Lagann which I ate in two sittings. Took me a while though before I convinced myself to watch the first episode.

  4. I mostly put off watching completed shows because it’s something of a commitment. I don’t really start things unless I have a chunk of free time to devote to watching it.

  5. Personally, i didn’t like the Gintama manga, the humor was ok, but all everyone did was stand around, instead of having a different pose or motion during conversions. I don’t know why that bugged me, but I have yet to read another chapter.

  6. Hmm…I have the opposite problem these days. It’s not so hard to watch that first episode, but I’ve been getting tired of things more quickly than I used to, and sticking with series is a chore. It’s been a while since I watched a show that inspired me to roll through it in a day.
