Kio Shimoku Twitter Highlights July 2025

Kio’s PC is not doing so well.

The print edition of the latest chapter of Spotted Flower is out (and by the time of this blog post, so should the digital!).

Kio watched one of his How Do You Like Wednesday? Blu-ray: Visiting 21 European Nations in Our 21st Year.

Kio voted in Japan’s recent elections.

Because he has a number of days off, Kio feels he should go see the Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle Part 1 movie.

When he saw the movie Kokuhou, Kio managed to eat ramen and not have to pee for the entirety of the 175-minute movie, so he decided he’ll do the same for the Demon Slayer movie, which is 155 minutes long.

Kio talks about not feeling the effectiveness of some mochi (This is missing some context, but it might be related to the ramen).

The ramen plan worked. “Total victory.”

Kio got into Demon Slayer thanks to the anime and then bought the entire manga. However, he never finished it, so he doesn’t know how it ends.

Kio thought a picture of two tortoise toys from the Ichiban Kuji line looked shockingly realistic, only to realize one of them was an actual tortoise. It reminds him a lot of his own pet.

Kio Shimoku Twitter Highlights April 2025

April was a relatively light month of tweets for the Genshiken artist.

Kio spent all of April Fool’s driving, so he couldn’t see any of the jokes. Someone suggests he still has time to fly to the US and experience the day there, and Kio responds that he’d only end up seeing American April Fool’s gags as a result. Another person mentions that he heard Genshiken 3 was coming out, to which Kio replies, “Yay!”

Kio drew fanart of Sis-tan (the mascot of the arcade Okayama Fantasista) for her 10th anniversary. SIsta-tan tells Kio that he’s helped make her anniversary more splendid, and asks Kio what games he’s played at arcades.

Kio responds that there were certain games—namely Neo-Geo ones—that he would only ever watch at the arcades because he wasn’t brave enough to play against other people. He did get to play them at a friend’s house, though. When it came to games he actually played, he liked vertical-scrolling shooters like Gunbird and RayForce.

Sis-tan replies in turn that it was still great that Kio had an environment where he could play Neo-Geo, especially one where no one as skilled as Kohsaka in Genshiken would show up. And while Okayama Fantasista doesn’t have a whole lot of vertical shooters, it would still be great if he came to play the ones that are there.

Kio got help to finish his work schedule for April, but it looks like some of his other work will spill into May. A person replies that Gundam GQuuuuuuX model kits come out in May, but Kio doesn’t think he’ll be able to buy them, so he’s giving up now. He really wants them all, though.

On May 10, Kio will be at the Rakuen: Le Paradis gallery in Tokyo giving a talk with Tsuruta Kenji. It’s a part of an entire month of talk shows.

Kio is happy to finally have some time to watch the first episode of Gundam GQuuuuuuX. He’s jealous of those who can watch the first episode without having seen the theatrical release, The Beginning, which he did.

Kio thought nothing would really surprise him in the first episode of GQuuuuuuX just because he saw The Beginning in theaters, but the ending theme made him a lot more emotional than he expected. [The ED is by hololive’s Hoshimachi Suisei!]

He was already seeing fanart of the show’s characters before the first episode even aired, so watching the ending video had him in tears. The personalities contrast between the two main girls is right up his alley, and his imagination is running wild as a result.

Someone responds that he also expects to see old men dancing to the opening. Kio recalls grinning so hard he could die at “Naatu Naatu” from RRR, and wonders if the old men dancing to “Plazma” could beat that.

Despite a busy schedule, Kio went to the Hirano Kouta Super Expo gallery, featuring the work of the Hellsing author. He thought it was fantastic, from the way it showcased the power and insanity of the work, to the choice of manuscript pages to feature, to the way it showed off what makes all the characters great.

He wanted to listen to the audio guide by the Hellsing characters Luke and Jan, but he didn’t realize that he needed to connect to it through his smartphone, so he ran out to get some cheap earbuds.

Kio wears bifocals, but he likes to look at his work with the naked eye. However, when he does, he risks getting headaches and has to take Bufferin (a brand of aspirin).

Kio is happy that after a day of intently painting erotic naked skin in grayscale, he then gets to watch trailers for the new Ghost in the Shell and Steel Ball Run anime.

Kio checked out a special for How Do You Like Wednesday?, The Conquest of 21 European Countries in Our 21st Year.

Kio Shimoku Twitter Highlights December 2024

New web chapter of Spotted Flower. This one reveals a plan by Ogino-sensei to be engaged to both her partners!

“A new Gundam by Studio Khara. Wheeew, what a time to be alive.”

Kio wonders if the new model kit for Gundam GQuuuuuuX will have the parts sorted by color.

Kio thinks Lupin III: Castle of Cagliostro still holds up.

Kio watched Black Magic M-66 on DVD, and the video quality was rough. He’s hoping for a remaster.

For a color illustration with a lot of skin tones, Kio tried a high-contrast style with lots of layers and some airbrushed red. He thinks he could figure out how to replicate what he did, but is holding off on that for now.

Kio was interviewed by Yomiuri Shinbun a little while back along with fellow manga artists Toyoda Minoru and Shito Reisa. (Unfortunately, I can’t seem to access the site.)

Kio is shocked to discover that yuzu pepper sauce has no black pepper in it. Apparently, in Kyushu, they call chili peppers (karashi) “black pepper” (koshou). It might have something to do with English.

Just as Kio has been gathering materials about the Edo period, the latest Taiga drama is going to be set during Edo.

Kio never made an account on mixi (an older Japanese social networking site), so while he might be an old man himself, he can’t jump in on discussions related to it.

Kio grilling meat with family to celebrate.

A visit to a couple of galleries in Ikebukuro: One for giant robots, another for the author of Initial D.

Kio was finally able to buy the Real Grade ver 2.0 RX-78-2 Gundam model kit from his local model store.

In the new year, Kio plans to release part of It’s All Your Fault, Sensei 2, the sequel to his 18+ doujinshi. In the meantime, the first book is on sale at various sites.

A fan got one of the autographed artbooks (the sister from Jigopuri), and Kio thanks them.

As the New Year rolls in, Kio is thankful for getting to release his artbook.

Kio Shimoku Twitter Highlights November 2024

I want to preface this month’s Kio Shimoku Twitter Highlights acknowledging the recent exodus of Twitter users. There’s always a chance that the site might go under, which would make a lot of these posts hard/impossible to read. While it would make sense to take screenshots, a lot of Japanese artists are not comfortable with that, so I’ve been using quotes all this time to avoid any potential issues (and also to save time).

My compromise has been that I try to make my tweet summaries useful to read even if the tweets themselves disappear. Hopefully it’s enough.

Spotted Flower Chapter 47!

Kio really likes the new Ranma ½ anime. It’s not a total copy of the original manga, but it captures what makes the series interesting.

He recalls how Ranma came out after Takahashi Rumiko had achieved her “perfect form” from working on Urusei Yatsura and Maison Ikkoku, and that Ranma was good from the start.

Kio mourns the passing of horror manga great Kazuo Umezz, who he considered a real genius.

Tortoise sunbathing!

Kio decided to start re-reading the manga Pandora in the Crimson Shell: Ghost Urn because the series ended. He remarks that the satisfaction he gets from reading manga is amazing.

The author of Pandora in the Crimson Shell, Rikdo Koshi (of Excel Saga fame) thanks Kio, and talks about how he was inspired by the cosplay in Kio’s work. Kio says he’s the grateful one because he got to read Rikdo’s work.

Kio owns two different editions of Pandora in the Crimson Shell, and would like a second season of the anime.

Kio’s art is included in a illustration collection to celebrate the 15th anniversary of the manga magazine Rakuen: Le Paradis. It will be on sale at Comitia 150.

Kio went to VOTOMS Model Exhibition 2024. To him, nothing beats seeing this stuff in full three dimensions, and he particularly admired the work of modeler Aihara Yoshiyuki.

Kio had to do a factory reset on his PC last month, but when he tried to re-download his saved assets for Clip Studio Paint, it didn’t work for some reason.

For the Rakuen artbook, Kio went back to using analog tools after 17 years away from them. This is why he was looking for his old supplies back in September.

The Part 2 DVD for the Vietnam special of How Do You Like Wednesday? Kio did not originally watch this as it aired, but because this was seen as the final HDYLW special at the time, watching it now brought tears to his eyes.

The person running the model hobby shop Kio goes to is actually the same age as him. This makes Kio want to cheer them on.

When he was little, Kio used to draw overhead diagrams of his own model hobby shop that included all the Gunpla he wanted but couldn’t buy. He would then pretend that his Kinnikuman and kaiju erasers were customers for his shop.

Kio wants every model kit there is.

What if he ran his own plastic model store? Kio considers the possibility…

Kio elaborates on his childhood dream of owning a model hobby shop in his art book interview. He then calls the tweet an advertisement that happened naturally.

The man is pretty sure he owns this Schpertor kit from The Five Star Stories.

After spending two days in bed, the tortoise emerges to enjoy the sun.

Kio is going to put the finishing touches on his ero doujinshi in one swoop.

Kio thanks garage kit builder Akichi, who recently read Genshiken.

Kio is looking forward to the recently announced 2025 Lupin III movie, directed by Koike Takeshi.

Kio Shimoku Twitter Highlights October 2024

This month, Kio enjoyed various media, but his PC might need replacing!

Kio has been thinking up the plot of an eromanga (different from the one he’s currently working on), and is now up to 4 chapters. He hopes he can get around to actually drawing it eventually.

Kio watched The Queen of Villains, the Netflix series about the iconic Japanese heel pro wrestler Dump Matsumoto. He found it to be a really good and intense work. The scene where Dump “awakens” to herself was cathartic.

After updating Windows, KIo’s PC no longer worked. However, starting it up in safe mode and updating some drivers brought it back.

Kio mourns the death of Ohyama Nobuo (original voice of Doraemon and Kappei in Zambot 3).

Kio got a model kit of the Daccas from The Five Star Stories.

Kio enjoyed this month’s chapter of The Five Star Stories.

Kio got his copy of Mujina, Perfect Edition.

Kio has inked 80 pages of his current eromanga project.

Kio’s PC went into factory reset mode. He thinks it might have been because there was a power outage when Windows was updating. A person in the replies helped Kio with some troubleshooting, but seemingly to no avail. Kio had stuff backed up, though, so it should be okay.

Kio is a fan of the manga Fist of the North Star: Legend of the Apocalyptic Drama Shoot, which presents Fist of the North Star as if it were a live-action television production where all the characters are actors. He likes that the production issues feel plausible for what happens in the original work.

Kio watched Gundam: Requiem for Vengeance. He likes how the Zakus really comes across as weapons, whereas normally mobile suits come across as more like living beings, or like ASIMO vs Atlas.

Requiem for Vengeance is practically a monster movie.

Kio watching another DVD from How Do You Like Wednesday? This time, they’re in Vietnam.

One person in the replies talked about how at the time, it seemed like this might be their final show, but Kio didn’t get into How Do You Like Wednesday? in real time, so it was different for him.

The Ranma ½ remake has been great in Kio’s eyes (even if they aren’t showing nipples anymore). It captures how the series felt in the beginning.

Kio watched Voltes V: Legacy. “Combination transformations are justice.”

Kio finally inked the line work for the final 80 pages of his doujinshi. He still has to add grays, blacks, text, and color for the cover, though (all of which take quite a bit of time).

Kio has a stomachache.

Hunter x Hunter coming back gives Kio life.

Kio talked to a younger person who was aware of the fact that Patlabor came out first with Yuki Masami’s manga. As Kio looked at this month’s issue of Model Grafix, it hit him that the people who would naturally know this are probably around 50 years old.

Kio Shimoku Twitter Highlights April 2024

Momentous events in Spotted Flower’s side chapters gather some fanfare this month in Kio’s tweets. And the end of Elden Ring at last!

Spotted Flower online side chapter featuring Not-Ogiue and Not-Sasahara getting it on (and Not-Ogiue proposing!).

Kio wishing a happy birthday to Tamaoki Benkyo, author of Deathscythe Cutie.

Readers talking about wanting to see Not-Ogi and Not-Sasa get married at least, and Kio responding coyly.

Cherry blossoms!

Kio went to the Narita Buddhist Temple for the first time in a long while. When asked about food recommendations in the area, he mentions eel.

The Our Treasure brand Z.A.P. from The Five Star Stories, now in Kio’s hands.

Kio rode the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route. His photos don’t have any people in them, but in actuality, it was crowded.

Kio says whether one wants to interpret Spotted Flower as a sequel to Genshiken or something else is up to the reader.

A second side chapter for Spotted Flower! This one focuses on Not-Yajima and Not-Hato.

A comic by Kio about assembling the Mechatro WeGo VOTOMS collab model kit. He actually got a positive response from the model kit designer!

Kio defeated Malenia in Elden Ring, and then goes into detail about the experience.

Kio bought and enjoyed the newest blu-ray from How Do You Like Wednesday?, titled Building a House in Hokkaido.

Elden Ring completed! Kio is a little sad that there was no last dungeon after the boss rush, though (Note: Let me know if there is one, and I’m totally off in understanding this.)

Kio Shimoku Twitter Highlights March 2024

Not a particularly momentous month for Kio Shimoku tweets, but still a decent variety.

Spotted Flower Chapter 45 is out in the physical edition of Rakuen (digital is end of March). Kio also shows off all the issues of Rakuen he’s collected.

Kio retweeted a previous tweet of his showing an old model kit of the L-Gaim MK-II that he tried to rework and improve. It’s not quite to his liking yet.

Joking that his heart is always in the Joker Star Cluster, the setting of The Five Star Stories.

Kio drew a short comic about building a model kit for the Ba Ga Hari BS Cobra from The Five Star Stories.

The adult video version of Kio’s 18+ doujinshi was on sale (ended 3/11). The tweet includes one old drawing, and I believe one that’s entirely new (on the right).

Kio reacts to the death of Toriyama Akira. “Ever since I discovered Dr. Slump in my boyhood days, I was happy to have the art of Toriyama Akira with me through life. May your soul find happiness.”

Kio finally finished reading through the 7th The Five Star Stories Designs book. He especially likes the character 剣聖ヴェイデリ・コーダンテ (Sword Saint Veidery Codante? I can’t find an official English spelling).

Responding to the death of Tarako, the voice of the main character of Chibi Maruko-chan (also the second voice of Monokuma in Danganronpa). “Whoa, whoa, whoa. Hold on…”

Kio tries out a Five Star Stories Shindanmaker, and the site decides that he would be part of the Magic Kingdom Buchtgma, his Motorhead would be Batsch the Black Knight, and he would be compatible with the Fatima Harper.

Kio has apparently been shadowbanned on Twitter for the past year. When someone replies that he should consider bluesky, he’s hesitant because of how long it took him to get on Twitter.

In response to the latest chapter of the mecha manga Kayuuma, Kio calls it “awful” but in a complimentary way.

The actual members of How Do You Like Wednesday? actually appeared in the anime Snack Basue

Kio comments that between Snack Basue, Frieren, and Delicious in Dungeon, is personally loving the heck out of all this food-centric anime.

Kio reacts to the death of Inomata Mutsumi, character designer on the Tales RPG series. “Inomata Mutsumu-sensei…I feel so sad…May your soul find peace in the afterlife.”

Exhausted from backing up an old hard drive.

Kio is going to take time poring over the illustrations book he got from the Nagano Mamoru exhibit.

Reacting to the manga artist Kusada drawing the Jamru-Fin from Gundam ZZ, Kio joins in on talking about how awesome the design is. Kio remembers seeing it in a plastic modeling magazine back then.

Kio is surprised to discover there are Gundam model kits that are Real Grade Ver.2. He remembers having trouble with the fine details of the Version 1 Real Grades due to his aging eyes, but now he has Hazuki Loupe magnifying glasses, so it should be okay

https://twitter.com/kioshimoku1/status/1773178086017626143.

The guy is having fun in Miquella’s Haligtree in Elden Ring, even though it’s so difficult (I think).

Kio Shimoku Twitter Highlights October 2023

Not much to speak of this month, but I did post this right before Halloween, so there might be something interesting in the next few days (that I’ll be posting in November).

High-quality version of the color art from Chapter 26.

Kio responds to my tweet about the Genshiken pop-up store merch I procured.

Kio rewatched Girls und Panzer: das Finale Part 3 in anticipation for Part 4.

Before seeing Part 4, Kio was looking forward to seeing how the first-year team would do. Now that he’s seen it, he seems satisfied.

Kio defeated a Gargoyle outside the Bestial Sanctum in Elden Ring, and also is 33% through the story after beating Radahn. At first, he thought it’d be too strong, but managed to pull it off using the Watchdog’s Staff.

He had a tough time with Crucible Knights, but thinks they have cute tails.

Kio wonders if he can play The Last Guardian on PS5, and is informed that the PS4 version should be compatible.

Kio defeated Astel and moved on to Liurnia.

He wants to beat everything, DLC included, but doesn’t know if he’ll be able to.

Kio wanted to re-read the vale tudo arc of the karate manga Shura no Mon (Asura’s Gate), which made him want to re-read the Showa arc of the similarly named but unrelated manga Shura no Toki (Time of Asura).

When asked if his next manga’s going to be fighting-based, Kio denies it.

Kio saw the movie Undercurrent, and thought it was a really good adaptation of the original.

Kio plans to watch the “Jungle Revenge” special for How Do You Like Wednesdays, but only got four hours of sleep, and is thinking he might doze off partway. Seems like this special is a follow-up to a DVD that was released six years ago.

In Elden Ring, Kio got a Dark Moon Greatsword.

A super-spicy curry for lunch followed with some Häagen Dazs.

Kio drew 100 pages of his ero manga, but still doesn’t feel that the end is in sight. He’s dumbfounded that he drew what he has, though.

Watching an “intense” turtle race on iZoo. Kio mentiones that there are even crashes.

Kio was having some trouble starting Twitter on his PC, but it was just because Microsoft Edge updating broke the start menu shortcut.

High-quality version of the cover to Genshiken Volume 7.

Kio Shimoku Twitter Highlights September 2023

This month, Kio Shimoku posted more Genshiken art, and we saw the opening of Genshiken pop-up shops across Japan! Yes, there’s even Ogiue merch!

Kio had a good deal of trouble finding this Engage SR3 model kit from The Five Star Stories, but then managed to order and receive it.

Having trouble with a turtle in Elden Ring.

More pages from Sister Wars, Kio’s genderbending The Phantom Menace parody. With that, Chapter 1 is done.

Kio kind of wings it with the color, but thinks that the work wouldn’t be that different even in B&W. Kio likes the color palette in Star Wars in general.

Amidala-kun.

Kio also uploaded Sister Wars Chapter 1 to Pixiv.

Kio went to an Azuma Kiyohiko Yotsuba&! exhibit at the Tokiwa-sou museum.

Kio is especially flabbergasted by how Azuma managed to do this panel.

Kio mentions that this Jedi is not to be confused with this girl from Kio’s 18+ doujinshi. However, he realizes that he might have certain preferences when the characters he came up with in 2010 and 2022 are so similar.

Ogiue and Ohno might technically fall under this category too. Kio includes an old drawing of Ohno cosplaying Leina from Queen’s Blade and asking Ogiue to cosplay as Leina’s little sister Elina. This is a voice actor joke because the original Ohno (Kawasumi Ayako) voiced Leina and the original Ogiue (Mizuhashi Kaori) voiced Elina.

After seeing a weather report that the temperature is going to be 35 degrees C (95 degrees F) after a typhoon, Kio is reminded of a line about becoming accustomed to torture.

It’s in the nature of manga artists to want to make efficiently beautiful manuscripts. The shorter, the better.

Kio got through 70 pages of his eromanga manuscript, but then wasn’t sure of a certain part and ultimately decided to put in twice as much effort and drew the whole thing.

In response to the passing of Terasawa Buichi (author of Space Adventure Cobra), Kio describes Cobra as an accumulated mass of sense. (That sense seems to mean like an artistic/aesthetic/creative sense.)

Kio buys a doujinshi by manga artist Kusada, who released it at the originals doujin event Comitia.

Kio took a lot at the author Shima Tokio’s 18+ doujinshi, and was not only surprised at a development that happens in the middle, but that Shima would have the time to draw this on top of working on a serialized manga.

Kio purchased a doujinshi by the artist Kusada called Sister vs. Chupacabra. He likes how there’s tsukkomi after tsukkomi in it.

Kio is thanked by the author Ichihara Hikari Z for preordering their manga, Seishun Libido Yama.

Kio opened Twitter for the first time in a while. He couldn’t keep up with the timeline, so he’s decided to give up and go to bed.

Kio read a comic drawn by Nagata Reiji, a person who left being a surgeon to become a manga artist, about that very experience. Nagata was apparently also serialized in Afternoon, and Kio decided to buy one of his manga.

Kio has been meaning to tweet about the Genshiken pop-up shop at all TSUTAYA stores (that began on September 22nd) but kept forgetting to do so. (Check out the replies as well for lots of Kio thanking very excited fans.)

High-resolution art of the school swimsuit Ogiue on the limited edition Volume 6 of Genshiken. [If you’re wondering if I own it, the answer is yes.]

Kio retweeted Koume Keito’s art for Wandjina in Fate/Grand Order. (Koume was the artist on the Kujibiki Unbalance manga.)

A tweet about the start of the Genshiken pop-up shop event, with Kio retweeting and responding to various photos taken by fans of the displays, including those lamenting items being sold out.

Kio’s own purchases from the pop-up shop. He got a full Madarame set.

The title page art for Genshiken Volume 6. (I seriously love this image.)

Something about starting from Nidaime/Second Generation (I’ll admit that this is a bit vague, and I’m not sure I fully understand this).

Some Genshiken Nidaime art from the 2012 Afternoon calendar.

Sue from the title page of Genshiken Volume 7.

Kio Shimoku Twitter Highlights August 2023

This month, Kio mostly talks about Elden Ring. But we also get to see a high-quality version of one of the best covers he ever drew (no bias from me, clearly).

Kio thinks the Crucible Knight’s tail in Elden Ring is cute.

After 77 hours, Kio finally got through Limgrave.

Two new web chapters of Spotted Flower.

Even after 100 hours, Kio is having trouble in Elden Ring. In many places, he feels that he would never have been able to figure things out without strategy guides. (Forgive me for not translating this in greater detail.)

Kio keeps seeing figures and illustrations from Elden Ring but for the most part has no idea who anyone is, seeing as he’s only played 16% of the game.

Reflecting on his time with a much older FromSoftware game, King’s Field II, Kio recalls his experience. Despite the fact that it wasn’t really “open world,” finding out how one area of the game connects to another was very exciting.

King’s Field III was like a road trip movie, in a good way. He got discouraged because of the Shadow Tower, and couldn’t finish it, though.

Kio doesn’t remember the reveal about the main character and lead female character in King’s Field III.

Kio declares his interim report on Elden Ring over for now.

Someone recreated the bouncing-boobs Ohno mini bust that came with a volume of Monthly Afternoon back in the day.

Kio makes a reference to the game Great Adventure: The Miracle of Saint Elmos: “This is awful.”

Kio has been playing Elden Ring offline, which may have impacted his enjoyment of the game.

He really enjoyed the anime adaptation of Toriyama Akira’s Sand Land. He likes how it brings back a Dr. Slump feel.

Visiting the AKIRA cel and animation gallery.

Some modeling magazine purchases alongside Armored Core 6.

There was a remix of AKIRA music playing at the gallery, and Kio wondered where it came from. Turns out that it was new arrangements done for the gallery. Kio wants a CD of it.

High-quality version of the cover to Genshiken Volume 6, as well as just the art of Ogiue. Needless to say, I love this cover and volume to death. Also check the thread to see lots of people posting their copies (and variations).
