Let Sleeping Dogs Lie: The End of Inuyasha

I’m not a fan of Inuyasha, so I really haven’t kept up with it this whole time. I do recall buying a single issue from a store back when manga was still being sold like monthly comic books, and I did watch Inuyasha at my college’s anime club. When the heads of the anime club decided to stop showing Inuyasha, I wondered why. One of the last episodes we watched had Inuyasha and Sesshoumaru working together to defeat a common enemy while using their respective blades as intended (Inuyasha for destruction, Sesshoumaru for healing), so I thought that it was finally getting somewhere good and would conclude soon after.

Ha.

Many jokes have been made concerning the “never-ending” nature of Inuyasha, but finally we can stop cracking wise about it and switch to humor based on the fact that as of this week, Inuyasha finishes with 558 chapters.

Inuyasha ends with a final battle with the demon Naraku, after which Kagome makes a decision to choose what’s right over her heart’s desire. The battle itself is pretty nice and conclusive, but it’s the kind of final battle you know that Takahashi could have pulled out at any moment and it would have still made sense. Sesshoumaru wielding his Nendou Bakusai Ken Bakusaiga with its endless destructive capabilities, it could have been a cheese wedge forged by destiny instead.

Inuyasha thankfully concludes with an ending and all that, as opposed to the abrupt stop that occurred with its anime counterpart. It’s not the best ending I’ve seen, but I doubt it’ll displease too many people or get accused of being a cop-out/Gainax Ending/any other conclusion-themed perjorative.

Really, Inuyasha will ultimately not be remembered for its plot, so having an actual ending doesn’t hurt or help too much, though I think it leans towards the latter. I’m not a fan of Inuyasha like I said, but I think its fans will continue to have adventures with Inuyasha and friends for a long time.

Inuyasha is finished, but it’s still endless.

In conclusion, I just want to point out that I was the first person to say that Inuyasha is “Dragon Ball Z for girls.” If anyone says otherwise, they’re wrong.

  1. WHAAAAAAA!!!! :(

    My fave series has ended!

I want more, Inu stories…. I’ll have to settle for fanfic now.

*crys* no more new stories about my Sesshy :(

Oh… love the ending though! Jumped into the future… weddings, babies and all! YAY!

Mad at Keade, GRRRRR, I do not agree with her. *fumes and throws poison venom at her*

…seems Sesshy don’t agree with her either…. cool! *rushes off to write fanfic about Fluffy visiting Rin* We all know he doesn’t want her going back to a human village, or he wouldn’t be there, willingly being surrounded by all those pathetic humans! :) Sesshie’s glare at Kagome’s new title for him = Priceless! LOL! LOL! LOL!

I’m miffed over Kaede taking Rin away from Sesshomaru X( but, seeing how Sesshy is visiting Rin, we can hope they get together once she’s grown up. Looks like Rumiko is not going to be telling us either way :( , so I’m going to assume they will and be happy with that. :)

  2. You know, when I caught Inuyasha on TV it helped me confirm that it represented Rumiko’s “phoning-it-in” period. When I read this finale–my first chapter of Inuyasha!– I honestly felt like I, with no understanding of Inuyasha beyond the basic premise and main characters, could have written it. You’ve got to give Takahashi that: she knows formula.

  3. Welcome to the World of the Fan Fiction ending.
And ending that gives the start of something else.

AKA, Japs don’t know how to write endings.

  4. Don’t want to beat a dead horse or anything, but I got a kick out of your comment about Inuyasha being DragonBall Z for girls. I’m a girl and I watched DBZ alongside Sailor Moon on Toonami for the duration that they aired starting when I was 7. I wonder what that means…

Anyways, I just stumbled upon your blog and am really loving it. You bring up a lot of interesting discussions in the entries I’ve read so far. I’m getting really excited to check out Kaiba :)

  5. The only time I’ve heard the phrase “dragon ball z for girls” was in the webcomic vgcats, but then again I don’t visit forums that much. My beef with Rumiko is that she dragged and beat this horse for way too long; she could’ve put this half-assed ending around volume 20 maybe or even before.

Only think we could say about it was “finally!” and “you gotta be kidding me”.

  6. Super glad with the Inuyasha/Kagome ending.
I just knew they were meant to be. *sniff*
Kikyou’s death was a good thing, she often got in the way.

Only 1 kiss between InuxKag, but marriage sums it all up. ;)

  8. Leaving the InuYasha story just the way as Ms. Rumiko did it in her manga is enough satisfaction for me. Knowing that it has a great conclusion made me fell great and happier as I live my life. InuYasha series has changed my life a lot.. . .it has a great influence on me. It has taught me the acts of Kagome’s love for InuYasha and InuYasha’s affections for either Kikyo or Kagome. . . .all the emotions were comprised in this one anime. .the anime has all the elements of emotions I could think of and Ms. Rumiko showed it to his audience through each character:

    InuYasha – Transformation
    Kagome – Forgiveness
    Kikyo – Renewal
    Shippo – Cuteness
    Miroku – Bravery
    Sango – Strength
    Kohaku – Acceptance
    Koga – Competitiveness
    Naraku – Hatred
    Sesshoumaru – Compassion
    Rin – Faithfulness

It may not be the best anime in the world out there. .. especially when almost every year, Japanese animators always come out with new animation from talented manga creators . …For me. . .it’ll always be number one in my heart . . . .

If ever InuYasha is continued by the Japanese animators, I wouldn’t think that it would be better than Ms. Rumiko’s original series . .I mean, what would be InuYasha’ conflict then . .? Who would Kagome be jealous with now that Kikyo’s never coming back? And I don’t want the jewel of the four souls to be there again ….I don’t want any upcoming episodes that has something to do with that jewel . . . it’ll be soooo much anticipated!

What I adore most about this series is that I never anticipated the story or the plot itself to go exactly the way Ms. Rumiko told the story to be. She has exceeded my story expectations for the series that I learned and have loved it so much for since finished the manga and the animation. There’s always something good from watching the InuYasha animation because you can relate your situation to the characters of the anime. . ..
