The Fujoshi Files 14: Ookouchi Fujino

Information:
Vice-president of her high school’s Art Club and member of the Nagi-sama Fan Club, Ookouchi Fujino is a fairly quiet girl who prefers to observe more than she does to take action. As such, Fujino strikes a contrast with her more energetic and aggressive best friend and Art Club president Kimura Takako, and can often be seen either tempering Takako or encouraging her habits depending on the situation. Fujino gives off an air of knowledge and authority that makes her both easy to approach and hard to disrespect.

Not much is known about Fujino’s family, except that she has a younger cousin named Miyuu and that the women of her family are bad with sunlight. Fujino also has an impressive figure, but chooses not to flaunt it, and rarely ever opens her eyes, the main exception being when she sings.

Fujoshi Level:
Ookouchi Fujino is able to make astute observations about her male friends and the “closeness” of their companionship, but rarely do her reactions get out of hand. She also appears to know a decent amount about anime and manga, but not to the extent one would expect of a fan. If ever there was such a thing as a low-key fujoshi, then Fujino is it.

Information:
Kinon Bachika is the third-eldest sibling of the Bachika family. She, along with her brother Kittan and her sisters Kiyoh and Kiyal, attend the highly unusual Daigurren Academy. As the assistant to the head of the School Disciplinary Committee Rossiu Adai, Kinon can frequently be seen at his side helping him to administer the rules properly, a necessary task given the high number of delinquents at Daigurren Academy, though the unique rules of the school mean that fighting is not only allowed but encouraged.

In her free time, Kinon finds the opportunity to draw racy images of her male classmates and teachers in romantic congress with one another. These include well-known figures such as Kamina and her own brother Kittan, but also her boss Rossiu, for whom she has feelings.

Fujoshi Level:
Kinon Bachika can be seen carrying around her sketchbook constantly, always eager to think up new pairings to whet her fujoshi appetite. However, Kinon is also somewhat embarrassed by her obsession, and tends to keep her sketchbook close by.

Susanna Hopkins, typically known as Sue, is an anime fan from Boston, Massachusetts who was influenced at a very young age by Japanese friend Ohno Kanako. Since then, she has become a consummate fangirl whose blunt personality and striking physical features, namely her long blond hair and piercing gaze, are capable of throwing off even the most hardcore of otaku. After her first visit to Japan along with her friend Angela Burton, Sue formed a close bond with Ohno’s fellow clubmate at the Society of Modern Visual Culture at Shiiou University, Ogiue Chika, though that relationship can occasionally be an antagonistic one.

Sue is well-versed in anime and manga both popular and obscure from nearly every decade, and her tendency to use anime phrases in everyday speech is backed by an incredible memory that facilitates her language-learning capabilities. Sue’s actual age is an enigma, but the fact that she eventually starts studying abroad at Shiiou University implies that she is either over 18 or a genius, with neither choice being out of the question.

Fujoshi Level:
Susanna Hopkins is not unlike many other female American anime fans, but Sue takes it to another level entirely, something that extends to her fujocity as well. Her knowledge of anime and manga is equivalent to that of an old-time otaku veteran, and her apparent lack of shame allows her to confront anyone and everyone while loudly expressing her interest in boy-on-boy action. Sue is a fujoshi dynamo, and woe to those who stand in her way.

Information:
Angela Burton is an anime and manga fan hailing from Boston, Massachusetts who befriended a Japanese student named Ohno Kanako while the latter was living in the United States. Though Ohno eventually had to return to Japan, Angela would come to visit Japan on more than one occasion, along with their good friend Susanna Hopkins. While they were partly interested in reuniting with Ohno, their main task was attending the largest doujin event of the year, Comic Festival. Initially, the flaxen-haired Angela startled the members of Ohno’s club with her strong, outgoing personality and her attractive and athletic figure, but would soon become a valued friend and an otaku comrade-in-arms.

Angela has a talent for sports, allowing her to physically endure the wear and exhaustion of an all-day doujin event far better than most. Her favorite shows include General Frog and Gungal Bleed, and she also possesses a strong fetish for glasses-wearing characters, though she does not actually wear glasses herself.

Fujoshi Level:
Angela Burton is unusually athletically fit for a fujoshi, which allows her to accomplish more, but what really sets her apart is her personality, specifically her openness as a fan. Perhaps due to her American upbringing (combined with the corrupting influence of anime), Angela can easily declare her fetishes in public and describe them in explicit detail. Angela’s tastes are also more diverse than most fujoshi, as she describes herself as being interested in both “male-oriented” and “female-oriented” doujinshi.

The Fujoshi Files 10: Asai Rumi

The students of North Haneda High are baffled by how the unassuming Asai Rumi can attract some of the most interesting friends, not least of which are the hottest girl in school, a ladykiller heart-throb and his best friend, as well as the hulking captain of the Judo club. However, what few know is that Asai has made her friends through the power of being a fujoshi. While not quick to admit to the fact, Asai does not deny herself as a fujoshi, and that honesty attracts friends and breaks down the mental barriers, including those of her tormentor-turned-best-friend and fellow fujoshi, Matsui Youko.

Bedridden as a child, Asai Rumi discovered manga thanks to a kind neighbor, a discovery which eventually led to her world being impacted by an un-shrink-wrapped BL title in a bookstore. Since then, she’s worked hard as a fujoshi, attending the major event known as Comic Banquet and even co-creating doujinshi of her favorite series, Fullmetal Prince, with the help of Matsui. Her favorite character is the titular Prince, but only when he is the “uke” in the pairing.

Fujoshi Level:
Asai Rumi’s presence as a fujoshi is so strong that she is able to make fujoshi who are in denial confront their own feelings about the stories they love. However, this comes at somewhat of a price, as Asai is so steeped in the world of BL and yaoi that she has trouble understanding normal romantic relationships. It is to the point that while she finds herself mutually attracted to her good friend Abe Takahiro, she manifests her interest by pretending to be an aggressive guy putting the moves on her yaoi lover.

The Fujoshi Files 9: Asou Akari

Information:
High schooler Asou Akari is a thorough merchandise-grabbing otaku who is also a popular artist and cosplayer. Known among otaku for her hardcore yaoi doujinshi, one would never expect her to also be one of the most popular and beautiful girls in her school, even sporting her very own fan club. While most fujoshi lead some degree of a double life, few have their two sides as diametrically opposed as Asou does. The only one in on her secret is her best friend from childhood, Tanigaki Sadakazu.

Asou’s current favorite show is Senkou no Two Top, for which she is proud to be one of the first to draw a doujinshi of it for Comic Market. Her obsession with the dark-skinned and handsome Senkou Two character Azuma leads Asou to also have a crush on a student at her school named Abe, who bears a resemblance to the character Azuma. However, Asou eventually learns that, while their looks are smiliar their personalities are not, which brings her a little closer to Tanigaki.

Fujoshi Level:
Asou Akari’s fujoshi level is indicated by her tendency to confuse fiction with reality. In addition to having a crush on Abe due to his resemblance to an anime character, Tanigaki’s decision to punch Abe (who had hurt Asou’s feelings) only inspires Asou to draw more doujinshi and turns that real life physical altercation into a steamy sexual fantasy. However, it’s not a fantasy about Tanigaki but rather one about a character from Senkou Two whom he resembles.

The Fujoshi Files 8: Nidou Kaneru

Information:
Nidou Kaneru is a young office assistant who draws doujinshi on the side and dreams of entering the world of professional manga. What Nidou lacks in talent, she makes up for with enthusiasm. Nidou Kaneru is very enthusiastic.

Originally not a fan of male/male relationships, she is convinced to start drawing yaoi by fellow doujin artist Tsuyuri aka Pantsuko. Although she is unable to sell even a single copy at first, Nidou does gain a degree over success over time. However, whenever she entertains the notion of quitting her dayjob to draw full time, her friends are quick to remind her of the merits of steady employment.

Nidou tends to act in a manner not quite befitting her age, and is patronized by everyone from higher-ups at work to elementary school students. Her main rival is the money-loving doujin artist Osana Najimi, and her best friend is her peace-loving teddy bear Aeolus.

Fujoshi Level:
Although Nidou Kaneru starts off drawing guy-on-guy doujinshi at the recommendation of another, it does not make her any less authentic as a fujoshi. After her artistic transformation, Nidou is unable to see two men together without thinking of the possibilities, whether it be two men who actually hate each other or even brothers.

The Fujoshi Files 7: Asano Yukina

Information:
Asano Yukina is a soft-spoken girl who has been drawing manga since she was little. As a child, she had formed a friendship with one Sawamura Seiji, who would later grow up to be feared by men and women alike for being one of the toughest delinquents around. Asano is well aware that Sawamura had a tremendous crush on her, but it appears to not have affected their friendship in any negative way.

Asano’s favorite manga character is Amagasaki Iori, whom Asano refers to as “Iori-sama.” Her favorite pairing is Iori x Fuyuki. So strong is Asano’s love of Iori that she can ramble on endlessly about his wonderful qualities both as a character and as a person.

Fujoshi Level:
Asano Yukina is a fearsome fujoshi who has rejected the realm of 3-D men. In her eyes, none living or dead, fictional or non-fictional are greater than her Iori-sama. She generally considers real men to be selfish and unkind, and seeks comfort in the purely 2-D arms of Amagasaki Iori. Even when her feelings are stirred by a brave display from her friend Sawamura, Asano’s first instinct is to turn him into a manga character, as if to say she prefers to like the fictional Sawamura over the real one.

The Fujoshi Files 6: Fujiyoshi Harumi

Information:
Fujiyoshi Harumi is a second-year (11th grade) high school student and the only fujoshi in her class at a school whose company-sponsored name changes every week. Although she is comfortable enough with her fujocity that the other students are aware of her hobby, Fujiyoshi is still somewhat afraid of showing others her yaoi doujinshi manuscripts. Fujiyoshi is a talented artist and regular participant at Comic Market, and her doujinshi range from Gundam SEED to Pretty Cure.

Fujiyoshi often has problems distinguishing conventional thinking from her own personal opinions, even among fujoshi. Fujiyoshi will also often draw very unconventional pairings, though she is also a fan of more popular pairings and even a few male-female ones. Unlike many fujoshi, Fujiyoshi is surprisingly athletic.

Fujiyoshi’s name is a pun on the word “fujoshi” itself. Harumi is the name of a former location of Comic Market.

Fujoshi Level:
While Fujiyoshi’s talent at sports may seemingly contradict her status as a fujoshi, it is actually the best indication of that status. Fujiyoshi’s athleticism is the result of pushing herself past her own limits while enduring Comic Market and other doujin events for long hours. This makeshift exercise, powered by her desire for yaoi doujinshi, improves her physical stamina, strength, and speed, making her able to do even more at future events. Her devotion to doujinshi has resulted in Harumi being fujoshi in both mind and body.

The Fujoshi Files 5: Ohno Kanako

Information:
Ohno Kanako is a member of the Society for the Study of Modern Visual Culture aka Genshiken at the prestigious Shiiou University, and is quite possibly the first willing female member to join the club since its inception. Ohno spent much of her childhood living in America and thus has a firm grasp of the English language, something shared by fellow female member Kasukabe Saki. While Ohno had previously visited both the Anime Society and the Manga Society at Shiiou University, she ultimately decides to stay with Genshiken due to their understanding nature. Although very nervous at first, Ohno slowly gains confidence in herself, eventually becoming a surrogate fujoshi older sister of sorts to Ogiue Chika and ultimately becoming the fourth Chairman of Genshiken after Sasahara Kanji steps down.

Ohno has very unique taste among fujoshi, one that resulted in her being ridiculed by many friends: A passion for middle-aged and retirement-age men  that is matched only by Ohno’s love for cosplay. Ohno participates in cosplay events so often that she has to maintain a schedule. Her cosplay is so successful that she has become the main attraction of Genshiken’s booth at school festival. It is for these reasons that Ohno forms a friendship with Genshiken member Tanaka Souichirou, an avid costume designer, but it is their care and understanding for each that leads them to start dating.

Fujoshi Level:
Ohno is mainly known for her love of older men and her cosplay. However, all of that pales in comparison to the fact that Ohno will actively attempt to transform her friends into fujoshi and reinforce ones who already have taken the step. Though only implied, it is clear that Ohno introduced yaoi to her young friend Susanna Hopkins at a rather early age, creating a dangerously powerful female otaku in the process. It is this active corruption of the youth of America that earns Ohno Kanako a remarkable place among fujoshi.
